Alfa Romeo to make F1 return after 30 years as they join forces with Sauber

Alfa Romeo will return to Formula One for the first time in 30 years in a new multi-year partnership, combining in a new team with Sauber.

The technical and commercial partnership will see the team race under the name Alfa Romeo Sauber from next season, carrying the Alfa Romeo logo while being powered by the 2018 Ferrari engines.

Pascal Picci, chairman of Sauber Holding AG, said: 'We are very pleased to welcome Alfa Romeo to the Sauber F1 Team.

Sauber chairman Pascal Picci said his company were proud to work with their new partners Alfa Romeo have not participated in Formula One since 1988 but are making a comeback Alfa Romeo raced in Formula One from 1950 to 1988, both as a constructor and engine supplier. They won the drivers' championship in 1950 and 1951 with Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio respectively. Sauber struggled in 2017, finishing last in the constructors' championship with just five points, all of which were scored by German driver Pascal Wehrlein. Sauber will hope the partnership will lead to a stronger performance next season
